Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) published this, her first children's book, as a serial in the St. Nicholas Magazine between November 1885 and October 1886, and as a book by Scribner's in New York in 1886. It was, of course, successful almost beyond belief and had the effect, unfortunate or otherwise, of parents' dressing their male sons in velvet costumes.
