Burmantofts Memories

’Paradise Row’, a novel by William James Wintle, was written in 1896 and based on the author’s personal experience of Burmantofts, Leeds. Since that time the area has changed beyond all recognition, yet little has been written about the locality, although ‘memories’ have appeared regularly in the @old Yorkshire’ articles in the Yorshire Evening Post.

The Burmantofts Local History Group was formed in 1986 with a small but dedicated number of people. This book was their idea, and grew quite naturally out of the increasing amount of material they amassed. They collected and recorded memories, researched and checked details, and with great patience put the book together word by word, picture by picture.
