Pick of The Week June 27th 2011 – Jane Austen Collection

Pick of The Week June 27th 2011 – Jane Austen Collection

A Superb Edition of The Selected Works of Jane Austen

If one English novelist were to be selected for purity of style, Jane Austen, the quiet recorder of love and manners among the lesser landed gentry, would be a popular choice. One of the principal wonders of literature, she laid her victims bare with unerring intuition. Her pen was deliciously wicked – but wit was her weapon – astringency and, perhaps, gentle irony. And always her prose was pure delight.

This collection contains all Miss Austen’s six classics;

Sense and Sensibility
Pride and Prejudice
Mansfield Park
Emma
Northanger Abbey/Persuasion

These fine, beautiful, powder blue volumes were created as a tribute to Jane Austen.

Bound in real lambskin, these books are ornately embellished with 23ct gold on spines, covers, and all page edges.

Blue Silk Endpapers and Blue Silk Ribbon Marker.

Pick of The Week June 15th 2011 – Complete Works of W. Somerset Maugham

SOLD 27/6/11 and going to Australia …..Look out For Another Set Coming Soon

If you have any Heron Books Collections For Sale please email me at sales@hcbooksonline.com

Complete in 31 Volumes – Gripping tales from the master story-teller.

Why is Maugham now hailed as a literary genius when so many critics once considered his novels too earthy, too sordid?

He may shock you, even outrage you – but he will always hold you spellbound with the sheer power of his stories.

Particularly compelling are his ‘Ashenden’ stories of a First World War Secret Service Agent, which is based on his own experiences.

In ‘Rain’, one of the marvellous stories in ‘The Trembling Of A Leaf’, he dared to build his story on a ‘reformed’ tart who is corrupted by a young missionary.

In ‘The Moon And Sixpence’, inspired by the life of the painter Gauguin, he further outraged society by making his hero reject his wife and Western values for primitive life in Tahiti where, as a cynical privilege of his rank, he took a woman as second wife as casually as one would buy a loaf of bread. How the critics howled! But how the public loved his earthy realism.

Pick of The Week 6th June 2011 – Zane Grey

Zane Grey – Master Writer Of The Western Story

Zane Grey (1872–1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that presented an idealized image of the Old West. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his bestselling book.

In addition to the success of his printed works, they later had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and TV productions.

Zane Grey, the Western writer, shaped the way the world will forever perceive the “Old West.”

In 57 novels, 10 books of Western nonfiction, and 130 movies, Grey, who died in 1939 at age 67, almost single-handedly created the “Myth of the West.” His respectful treatment of Indians was ahead of its time; his word paintings of some of the most spectacular country may never be equalled.

A prolific American writer and pioneer of Western as a new literary genre, Zane Grey produced over sixty books during his career. He presented the West as a moral battle ground, in which his characters are redeemed through a final confrontation with their past, or destroyed because of their inability to change.

Grey’s stories, set against the beautiful but harsh landscape of the West, have fascinated readers all over the world.

Have a look at at the Zane Grey’s West Society Website for Why you Should Read Zane Grey
